Why Support the Environmental Valuation & Cost-Benefit Website?

Environmental Valuation & Cost Benefit News (EV&CBN) is dedicated to covering the latest legal, academic, and regulatory developments pertaining to the valuation of environmental amenities and damages. For over a decade, Environmental Valuation & Cost-Benefit News has been the destination for objective information and vital news regarding the economics of environmental, energy, natural resource and related issues.

Recent court decisions, legislation, and regulatory orders indicate that measures of costs, benefits, and risks will increasingly be required in the future to justify public and private actions. EV&CBN is an indispensable source of information for estimating these parameters. You need Environmental Valuation and Cost Benefit News because regulations are changed every day, courts continually set precedents, and new data or estimation techniques lead to revisions in accepted wisdom. EV&CBN brings you the latest information on valuation of damages from the courts, from government agencies, from the academic literature, and from unpublished studies. We search daily newspapers, academic journals, government reports, research institutes, legal publications, court decisions, professional newsletters, books, conferences, commissioned studies, and websites to present the latest information in this rapidly changing field. We cover valuation estimates from a wider range of sources than most busy professionals can track by themselves.

We hope that this information will allow public and private organizations to comprehend the risks and benefits of various actions, help disputants to resolve conflicts equitably and efficiently, and improve the quality of public policies. We will only present empirical estimates quantifying private and social costs and benefits and damages, and steer clear of deep theoretical analyses.

The newsfeed is also intended to serve as a categorized database leading users rapidly to critical information. Between November 1, 2004 and August 31, 2006 3,176 stories were added to the database. EV&CBN can help overcome a severe limitation of cost-benefit analysis and other valuation exercises – whereby items difficult to quantify are omitted, effectively pricing these values at zero, thus biasing results.

The newsfeed is filled with money and time-saving ideas for governments, for companies and for individuals. We provide information about what works and what doesn’t quickly and efficiently. It is designed to serve as a bridge between academic scientists, economists, engineers, architects, policymakers, government officials and the general public.

Despite significant advances, too many policy decisions are still based upon rigid adherence to fixed ideas, limited information, political power, and irrational emotions.

Although cost benefit analysis and other frameworks for rational decision-making are being applied in more and more situations, these tools play too little a role in too many decisions--partly due to the time and funds required to implement good studies, and partly due to the power of the countervailing forces such as lobbyists, special interest groups, and large campaign contributors.

In addition, when these frameworks are applied the end-products generally omit significant factors or provide questionable estimates--rendering them to the dustbin of history, unless they happen to support positions of powerful proponents. Our broad coverage of many impacts -- environmental and non-environmental can help produce the comprehensive estimates needed to accurately measure costs and benefits of policies and programs

Researchers have produced thousands of useful studies and dozens of computer models. Yet too often they are not utilized by decision makers. What is needed are means to collect as much relevant information as is feasible, to analyze it rationally, to reconcile differences, and to disseminate it cost effectively in a manner easily understood by as many people as possible.

This newsletter is dedicated to the principal that all policies, policymakers, jurists, and advocates place values upon life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We believe that more information, explicit specification of assumptions, and rigorous analysis can help our society to better meet these ends.

We cover environmental valuation and cost-benefit news from around the world because we can all learn from the experiences, policies and technologies of others, and because the world is getting frighteningly smaller every day.
