The Washington launch of The Carbon Age: How Life’s Core Element Has Become Civilization’s Greatest Threat, a new book by Eric Roston, is being held on July 9th at Resources for the Future. The event will be hosted by Resources for the Future and The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions.
"Carbon" is the most important word people know the least about. We speak of it in discussions about climate, energy, high-end sporting goods, aerospace, drugs, foods to eat (or avoid), and the anachronistic carbon copy, "cc," in every e-mail. But carbon is also the central structural element of all life and civilization.
The Carbon Age: How Life’s Core Element Has Become Civilization’s Greatest Threat explores the history of the carbon atom and its essential historic role in our livelihood and industry – as well as the enormous challenges it poses in today’s world.
Eric Roston, a former reporter for Time magazine and author of The Carbon Age, will give an overview of the book, with discussion to follow from David Goldston, "Party of One" columnist for Nature and former chief of staff of the House Science Committee, and Christopher Joyce, correspondent for National Public Radio.
Roston wrote the book during his year-long stay as an independent visiting scholar at RFF. He is now senior associate in the Washington office of Duke University's Nicholas Institute.
